I’ve never been into flats. I’m more than inclined to throw on a pair of heels to dress up an outfit, but given that I walk to work, my feet wouldn’t survive a 2 mile hike in four inch heels. Instead I would opt for Uggs or even *gasp* Birkenstocks. However, with the current winter fashion consisting of dresses/skirts and leggings – Birkenstocks and Uggs just aren’t going to cut it. So my cousin, Ida, finally convinced me to get a pair of flats. With the selection this season I didn’t have to look very far to find a pair of buckled black Franco Sarto flats on clearance at Nordstrom. They are the perfect way to dress up a day-time outfit and still be able to stay walking after more than just a couple blocks.

If you’re like me and feel that flats have a tendency to visually cut legs off, leaving them short and stocky, then I’m about to share with you my epiphany. There is such a thing as heeled flats. During my search, I stopped at the Aldo sale rack and found a cute 1-inch wedged patent black flat. They still held that casual every-day effect yet elongated the legs as heels would.

And not all flats have to look like a pair of ballerina slippers with the ribbons cut off. Nordstrom clearance rack held so many varieties of flats it made your head spin. Jeweled, buckled, patent, shiny metallic ... and quite a few not-so-cute-at-all ones. Flats have become a shiny jeweled bridge that can lead you from day into night ... and back again.
